This phrase about the kind of God you meet in a dark alley came from Marcus J. Borg, I think, during a downlink Trinity program.
Books by Marcus Borg worth probing are his Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time and his other books. Elaine Pagels's recent Beyond Belief is an excellent review of how we received some of our negative views of the Christian religion. Her earlier books are also refreshing. Matthew Fox's Original Blessing may open new vistas for understanding God, as well as his other books. The PBS documentary From Jesus to Christ is an excellent summary of the ways in which the churches changed our view of God from one we welcome to one we would not want to meet in a dark alley. L. Michael White's From Jesus to Christianity is thought provoking.
